Accessibility at Riimukivi farm

At Riimukivi Historical Farm we are trying to create an accessible and enjoyable environment for all, wherever it is possible.

In the historical log buildings high thresholds and steep stairs can make moving around challenging, even for people without mobility issues.

To compensate, there are easily accessible tables outside and our Summer Kitchen offers a covered space our visitors can get to quickly in case of a sudden downpour.

There is also an accessible toilet, or rather an outhouse. We are situated in the 1800's, after all.

You can get into the main building, the old hall, and the craft shop with most mobility aids using portable ramps, that the staff will provide upon asking. The staff will also be happy to help you over the thresholds and provide assistance where needed.

If you have any other wishes or needs, feel free to ask and we'll do our best to help!

Interior of the old log house is decorated in traditional style. There is a large wood oven in the background and geraniums are blooming on windowsills

Accessible Toilet - and a Sensory-Friendly Space

The outhouse is built to resemble a traditional granary

The toilet, a separate outhouse with plenty of room to wheel around, is accessible by wheelchair and there is no threshold at the door.

The toilet door is usually locked, and the staff is happy to unlock it. The door will not be locked again until after the visit is over, so you don’t need to ask for the door to be opened again during the same visit.

There’s a latch on both inside and outside of the door. The staff will be happy to help if you need assistance with the latch. Inside, there’s a long curved wooden handle, that makes it easier to pull the door shut.

There is a remote controlled lantern to illuminate the space dimly. If you need more light, the staff will bring in a brighter lamp.

The remote controlled lantern has three modes: flickering, to emulate firelight, "breathing" to slowly brighten and dim, and a steady light. The remote control can be found on the left by the door.

You would not think it, but the toilet actually doubles as a Sensory-Friendly Space.

The air is fresh, and the space is suitable for relaxation or a sensory break, and if needed, it also doubles as a calmer and a more private breastfeeding area, although you are welcome to breastfeed wherever you'd like.

If you have not used a smell-free outhouse before, the staff will be happy to help. However, it is easy. There is a bucket of plant litter and a scoop by the toilet. After you are done, just put a scoop or two in the toilet, to cover any unpleasant smells, or ask for assistance. The toilet is also emptied every day.

Hand washing station

The hand washing stand has two corner shelves. The upper shelf has a metal water tank with a tap and the lower shelf has a metal bowl where the water runs when the tap is opened

There is no running water at the farm - we are in the 1800's, after all. There is, however, a container with a tap. Twist the tap to get the water running and twist back to turn off water.

Be careful to switch off the tap properly, or the container may be empty the next time you visit. You may also want to be rather quick when washing your hands.

If the container is empty, ask the staff to bring you more. They will be happy to do it, but it may take a little while, as the water needs to be pumped from a well.

There is no drain and the water goes to the bowl underneath the tap. If the bowl is too full, you can empty the bowl outside, or ask for assistance.

The washing station is wheelchair accessible.

Measurements of the washing station:

  • The space underneath the table is 76,5 cm (30 inches)

  • The top of the bowl is at 92 cm (36 inches)

  • The handle of the tap is 117 cm (46 inches) from the floor

Toilet seat

The railings of the accessible toilet seat are made from wood. Due to their structure they move a little when pushed or pulled, but are very sturdy, and can take a lot of pressure in any direction.

There is a lightweight step in front of the seat, that can be moved away if necessary. The step has a toilet paper holder that can be moved to the desired location.

There is a styrofoam seat warmer, that is comfortable and sturdy to sit on, but can break from sideways pressure. If you need to slide on to the seat from the side, the seat warmer can be removed.

Measurements of the accessible toilet and the seat:

  • Height of the seat 51 cm (20 inches)

  • Width of the seat 76 cm (30 inches)

  • Space between the railings 60 cm (23,5 in)

  • Space on both sides of the seat 80 cm (31 in)

  • Space in front of the seat 180 cm (5 ft)

Arriving to the Farm

The farmyard and the parking lot are both unpaved gravel. The surface is relatively hard and otherwise accessible. From the parking lot, you can get to the farmyard either along a forest path, or along the unpaved Haukkoniementie Road.

The Forest path

The length of the forest path is about 60 meters (200 feet). There is a short ascent at the beginning of the trail (about 20 cm (8 inches) over 50 cm (20 inches)) and at the yard end of the trail there are six shallow steps (about 10 cm (4 inches) per step).

The Haukkoniemi road - no stairs

If you want to avoid the stairs, take the Haukkoniemi road. The distance to the farmyard via Haukkoniementie Road is about 80 meters (260 feet) and the road slopes gently upwards from the parking lot towards the yard.

Dropping off passengers at the Entrance

Cars are not allowed to the farmyard, but passengers can be dropped at the entrance. There is a 5 meter (16 feet) walk from the entrance to the main building and outdoor tables.

There are easily accessible tables out on the yard.

The Summer Kitchen offers a covered space our visitors can get to quickly and easily in case of a sudden downpour.

The Main Building - Café and Craft Shop

The owners of the farm are standing by the main entrance in historical clothing holding a soot pot and a cloth-covered basket. They are smiling. Looks like someone just said something funny.

There are four steps in front of the main entrance of the building and two at the back entrance. By request ramps can be brought to the back entrance, to access the hallway with a wheelchair or other mobility aids.

  • Between the hallway and the hall, there is a high threshold of 10 cm (4 inches).
The width of the doorway is 90 cm (3 feet).

  • Between the hallway and the Craft Store, there is a threshold of about 6 cm (2,4 inches) .
The width of the shop door is 65 cm (just over 2 feet).

The staff will be happy to provide assistance with the thresholds and stairs where needed.

There is a mild scent of old wood, that the visitors describe as pleasant. There are scented products for sale in the craft shop, but they are made with high quality natural essential oils, that many who are sensitive to smells find inoffensive.

Pets and domestic animals

A brown lamb is looking curiously at a hand offering a flower.

Pets are welcome at Riimukivi Historical Farm. There are domestic animals on the farm, and all pets must be kept on a leash at all times.

Our lambs are friendly and curious. They like scratches as well as the cords and flaps that hang from people's clothes - they love to chew them, so watch out!

The path to the sheep fold is not completely level. The staff will be happy to provide assistance where possible.

The sheep don't know that human food does not agree with them. They like to eat it, but it makes them sick. Even fruit and vegetables, like apples or carrots can be very dangerous. Let's make sure to only give them Sheep Friendly Treats, such as dandelion leaves, clover and hay.
